Taking It Beyond Reading The Text

Although decoding words is an essential part of reading, it isn’t the only thing that matters. When kids learn letters, sounds, blending, and sight words, they begin the exciting reading process. However, this is just the beginning. They must also understand what they are reading and learn how to draw out the essential facts. These comprehension passages are perfect for early readers trying to improve their word recognition and understanding of what they read.

Teaching Comprehension

Reading comprehension can be a tricky skill to teach. Still, it’s so crucial for students to be able to understand what they read. By explicitly teaching comprehension skills and providing practice opportunities, we can help our students build the strong foundation they need to be successful readers. One way to do this is to give students comprehension questions after they have read a passage. These questions can be used to check for understanding and help students identify areas that need further clarification.

One of the hardest challenges when teaching reading comprehension at the kindergarten level is sourcing texts appropriate for your student’s grade. Many books leveled for emergent readers are great for practicing decoding and reading skills. However, they often lack the detail required to ask comprehension questions. This is not a criticism of these kinds of resources; they were designed to provide practice in reading. However, they do not work well when we are focusing on comprehension!

That is why we have created some simple comprehension worksheets that are perfect for early readers. These texts are easy to decode but also provide enough detail to allow students to practice answering comprehension questions.

Reading Comprehension for Kindergarten

When we talk about comprehension, we are talking about the reader’s ability to understand and make meaning of a text. This complex process involves several skills, including reading fluently, making inferences, and identifying main ideas. As teachers, we need to explicitly teach these skills to our students. However, providing opportunities for students to practice these skills independently is also important.

The comprehension worksheets are designed to assess students on how well they understand the text. The passages are short and easy to decode!

Let’s take a closer look at the worksheets! The print is large, making it ideal for beginning readers. We’ve also spaced the text for those students who need to use a tracking finger. The questions are straightforward to make it easier for our young learners.

Kindergarten reading passages

We’ve created two different skill levels. One for beginners who are just starting to grasp basic reading skills and a slightly harder one for those who need something a little more challenging.

The first two worksheets are for beginners. Students must read the passage and do some simple multiple-choice questions. All they have to do is choose the correct answer to the question. This is a good starter exercise for students starting to work on comprehension but requiring something reasonably simple.

The last three worksheets are slightly harder reading comprehension pages. Students must read the passage. The first question asks them to match the story with a picture. They must then answer two short questions.
